Blog Post 1 The Great Lakes Suite (2025) Owen Young

Listening to "The Great Lakes Suite" by Rheostatics felt really different from how I normally listen to music. I usually get distracted or skip around, but sitting and listening to the whole thing in one go made me slow down. It didn’t feel like just music. It felt more like something I was sitting inside of. The biggest thing I noticed was how much it reminded me of being at my uncle’s cottage in the summer. While I was listening, I kept picturing the lake there. Especially those quiet mornings when the water is completely still and everything feels calm. There’s not much going on, but it still feels meaningful. The album gave me that same feeling, like just being there is enough. However, some parts of the music felt heavier. It made me think about how the lake can change. At the cottage, it’s not always calm. Sometimes the water gets rough and the mood shifts. That contrast stood out to me. It reminded me that water isn’t just peaceful, it can also be powerful. It connects to stories like The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, where the lake becomes something more serious.

What I found interesting is that the album doesn’t really tell you what to think. It just creates a feeling and lets your mind go wherever it wants. For me, it kept bringing me back to those summer memories. It felt less like I was learning something new and more like I was remembering something I already knew. This connects to what James Carey talks about, where communication is more about shared experience than just giving information. It also made me think about how normal it is to be around water here. Growing up in Ontario, lakes are just part of life. But this made me stop and actually think about it. Those simple moments at the cottage, like sitting on the dock or just looking at the water, feel small, but they actually mean a lot.

Overall, this didn’t feel like something I needed to analyze too much. It felt more like something to sit with. It made me think about summer, water, and memories in a deeper way. One thing I’m still thinking about is whether the album creates these feelings, or if it just brings back memories that were already there.
